In light of underwater archaeology's status as an emerging international cultural issue, the Ministry of Culture has drafted the nation’s first “Underwater Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.”
COPYRIGHT NETWORK FOR LITERATURE
The Ministry of Culture has combined the 2014 Taipei Rights Workshop with the visit of an international copyright delegation, and plans to establish an English-language copyright information platform.
REHEARSALS VALUED BY NEW SUBSIDY
The Ministry of Culture plans to set aside a budget of NT$15 million (approximately US$489,800) to assist with rehearsals for performing groups in the fields of music, dance, traditional opera, and modern drama in 2015.

I am very, very happy about the 10 year visa policy. It is a very significant change and will make it a lot easier than before to travel to China, especially for our generation. Many of us have academic connections with scholars and universities in China and go to China every year, sometimes twice a year. This 10 year visa policy is a great progress in travel arrangement. Many of us have families in China. When family members were ill or had emergency in China, we needed to go back immediately and visa was often an issue. I hope with this 10 year visa policy, the length of stay -- being 90 days, or 120 and 180 days--, can be also a standardized practice.

Rural Women and China's Disappearing Collective Past
Talk by Gail Hershatter, University of California, Santa Cruz

What can we learn about the Chinese revolution by placing a doubly marginalized group—rural women—at the center of the inquiry? And how does an examination of collectivization in China help us to understand the rapidly changing countryside today? In this talk, Gail Hershatter explores changes in the lives of women in rural Shaanxi province during the early decades of state socialism, the 1950s and 1960s, comparing them to the lives of women in contemporary rural China. She asks whether rural Chinese women had a revolution, and if so, when and what sort of revolution it was. Such questions encourage us to consider others that preoccupy historians: when is gender a useful category of historical analysis? How is the historical record shaped in interactions with the present moment? What counts as an event worth remembering? Who gets to decide?
Gail Hershatter is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her books include The Workers of Tianjin, 1900-1949 (1986), Personal Voices: Chinese Women in the 1980s (with Emily Honig, 1988), Dangerous Pleasures: Prostitution and Modernity in Twentieth-Century Shanghai (1997), Women in China’s Long Twentieth Century (2007), and The Gender of Memory: Rural Women and China’s Collective Past (2011). She is a former President of the Association for Asian Studies (2011-2012). This lecture is cosponsored with the UCLA Department of History
