TAIWAN ACADEMY OUTPOST OPENS IN LA
The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will open its doors to the general public by offering a film screening series starting Oct. 3, and hosting a black-and-white photography exhibition that will run through Jan. 2, 2015.
ART BANK COLLECTION IN TOKYO
A total of 22 unique artworks by 19 Taiwanese artists has been shipped to Japan for the Art Bank’s first-ever overseas display. The exhibition titled "Silent Time" will run through Sept. 15, 2015 at the Taipei representative office in Tokyo.
U-THEATRE ON NORTH AMERICA TOUR

湘西忆往 - 抗日战争期间毙人场合的回忆
七十多年前，在抗日战争（1938-45）期间，曾经看过政府对死刑犯执行枪毙的情况。我那时只有十岁左右，家住沅陵。沅陵在抗战时有几年是第九战区司令部的所在地，也是湘西行署驻节中心。所以经常有死刑犯在城东的校场坪行刑—枪毙。行刑前，城里内外、大街小巷市民来往集中的地方，如城门口，总是有行刑布告，用大红叉打在受刑人的姓名上，并且有所犯罪行，和所犯法律某款某条为依据，在何年何月何日，“验明正身，绑赴刑场，执行枪决”等等字样。我常常和其他小玩伴们一起，按时前往我们就读的朝阳小学和湖滨初中附近的校场坪“看热闹”。我的家也在附近，我每天都要穿过东城门口上学和回家。因此，那几年毙人的场合看得不少。
届时，只见从东城门口，走出一队背着“盒子炮”（现已绝迹的一种大型的手枪）的枪兵十来对，在前面开路，中间便是被架到刑场去枪毙的犯人。后面又有五、六对同样的枪兵。一个带罪赴死的人为甚么要这么多人“护架”呢？据说是因为怕有人劫法场，把临刑的犯人抢走。这种事据说并非绝无仅有。由于城门口离校场坪中心毙人的地方还有约百多米的距离，要通过一条稀散的林阴道，所以路两旁常有很多闲人夹道围观。我和一些小伙伴最喜欢挤进人群，占在好奇的人群中，仔细看死刑犯的情况。这些犯人一律是双手反绑于背后；从被绑的手腕处，沿脊骨正中向上，插一块罪犯处死的牌子，延伸到脑壳上再一个脑壳高的地方，上书“某某犯某某姓名”。牌子上还有醒目的大红叉从上到下，打在字上。围观的人都看得清请楚楚。两旁各有一个枪兵押着向前走。不仅能看到整个行刑大队的情况，也可以看清死刑犯身上所背负的姓名和犯罪赴死的原因，以及犯人的走姿和表情。行刑队以后则有行刑官员四、五人，常作中山装，威严地像是压阵，跟在枪兵后面，然后是闲人。有时候看得出来，其中有犯人的家属，像是出丧的队伍，有号啕大哭的，由亲人簇拥着，一把鼻涕一把泪地向前跟着。再后显然是看热闹的群众。
看到这里，我们一些多动的孩子和闲人，就转身向校场坪跑，又到那里去赶热闹。围观的群众在划定的界线之外，排成一大排，隔着大约五十来米瞧着。一会儿，犯人到达划定的地方，跪了下来。被身后的几个枪兵，分别对着犯人的脑袋，“砰”地几枪，犯人即见向前扑倒。也偶尔有向后倒的。枪声一响，围观的人都拍起手来。我们几个小伙伴也不例外地跟着拍。但它不是表示欢呼或欢迎，而是用拍手产生的响声，虾走被弊的人在死去的那一刻出窍的灵魂，不要来到“我”的身上找麻烦。人死了，刑场也就空了。人们散去后，整个空旷的校场坪，只留下一个尸体，孤零零地躺着。有时，人一散去，家属就在尸体旁，搭起祭奠的排场。这时便没有人围观了。看得多了，我记得对死刑犯的情况，可以作出以下的归纳。
1．绝大多数是男的，只有一次是女的。也多是成年人，极少数是老人。
2．死罪的种类有“汉奸”，“土匪”，“毒贩”和“杀人犯”。这些人的死罪有时可以从其走向校场坪的林荫道上的表现猜到。例如“汉奸”最“不成气”，离杀场好远就走不动了，两只腿已经撑不起身子，要由两旁的枪兵架着，连膝头都在地上拖。毒贩也不行，摸样比较“文弱”，面无血色，常像有病的书生。“土匪”最“值价”，一路上颇有“英雄气概”。有时也许是在绑赴刑场前喝了酒，一副关公脸，口里还发出呓语，“旁若无人”的样子，不知说些什么。我们少年中可能有人在心中，暗地里还有几分钦羡呢。
3．祭奠的排场也各有不同。有的很简单，只是烧香而已。有的很阔气。最讲究的一次，我记得与当年在死者住宅所办的豪华法式，相差不大。摆了法场，有道士或和尚敲木鱼念经，当时就把死者换装入殓。棺材也有气派。还有人批麻带孝呢。晚上则点燃汽灯照明。我和小伙伴也曾走到近处，想看个清楚。却被法场里外打招呼的人，瞪眼做出不友好的样子而离去。这种死刑犯的家属，至少是富裕而有面子的。我当时就猜想，可能是大毒枭。也许是独霸一方的土匪头子。回顾起来，这种毙人的场合，亲临其境者，大约二、三十次。抗战胜利以后，离开沅陵，就再也没有见过了。

Please note that the Desert Rescue Squad has requested use of our Barstow College campus again this year for their annual SAR City event during the weekend of October 10 – 12, 2014. They will be occupying the whole campus with over 300 participants expected. As early as October 9th (Thursday evening) you will start to see activity around campus. We encourage you to attend next weekend’s event. The purpose of SAR City is to bring our rescue, fire, medical, and law enforcement personnel together and offer them a weekend full of excellent training, new ideas, and information. SAR City also helps raise funds to upgrade and service rescue equipment and continue quality training for the Barstow Desert Rescue Squad. Have a great Friday!

Free Flu Shots Available for CVT Members with a PPO/CVS Caremark Plan
Flu season is here, and getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to keep you and your family healthy. With that in mind, California’s Valued Trust (CVT) wants to make it as easy as possible to help our members fight the flu this season.
This year, CVT PPO members (subscriber, covered spouse or domestic partner, and covered dependents) can receive a free flu shot at a CVS Pharmacy, OR at a participating major retail pharmacy. A certified pharmacist will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the flu or the flu shot vaccine. To take advantage of this opportunity:
• Simply go to any CVS Pharmacy during their flu clinic hours, show your CVT PPO Member ID card, and receive a free flu shot. There is $0 copay to the member, and covered dependents age 9+ can be vaccinated at most CVS pharmacies. Visit the CVS website at www.cvs.com/flu to find locations or schedule your flu shot.
• OR, visit a participating (in network) retail pharmacy for your flu shot. Show your CVT PPO Member ID card, and receive a free flu shot. There is no copay to the member. Age limits will vary with the pharmacy.
Scheduling a flu clinic at your school district
You can schedule a flu clinic at your worksite as part of your prescription benefits. A certified pharmacist or nurse will be on hand to administer shots, and answer any questions you may have about the flu or the flu shot vaccine. All CVT members with medical coverage through Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California and Kaiser Permanente are eligible for a flu shot with $0 copay at the worksite flu clinics sponsored by CVT.
