Call For Papers
The International Advisory Board is pleased to announce the Call For Papers for the Fifth International Conference on Food Studies, held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA from 18-19 September 2015.
2015 SPECIAL CONFERENCE FOCUS:
"A Cross Roads in Food Studies: Alternative vs Traditional Food Systems and Movements"
The world faces a series of challenges that engage the food studies community. On the one hand, some regions of the world are increasingly plagued by food insecurity, hunger, and famine. On the other, questions about the environmental and economic sustainability of traditional input-heavy agriculture continue to encourage scholars and practitioners to think in terms of a return to local or community-based agriculture. Linked to this discussion is the controversy over the development and cultivation of genetically modified foods, the role of organic agriculture in modern food systems, and concerns about our ability to feed an ever-growing human population.
The 2015 meeting will focus on the cross roads between alternative food systems and traditional systems of agricultural production. We welcome debate, discourse, and research from scholars and practitioners who engage these issues as well as other subjects related to the food studies discourse.
CONFERENCE THEMES:
Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, focused discussions, or colloquia are invited that address the broader themes listed below. In addition to the special focus, paper presentations will be grouped into one of the following categories for presentation at the conference:
Theme 1: Food Production and Sustainability
Theme 2: Food, Nutrition, and Health
Theme 3: Food Politics, Policies, and Cultures
2015 Special Focus: A Cross Roads in Food Studies: Alternate vs Traditional Food Systems and Movements
Presenters may also choose to submit written papers for publication to the fully refereed Food Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal. If you are unable to attend the conference in person you may still join the community by becoming a member and submitting your article for peer review and possible publication, uploading an online presentation, and enjoying subscriber access to the journal.
The next submission round to submit a proposal (a title and short abstract) is 7 October 2014*. For more information on submitting your proposal and registering for the conference, please visit the link below.
*Proposals are reviewed in rounds adhering to monthly deadlines. Check the website often to see the current review round.
