Looking Back, Looking Forward: Contemporary Chinese Art, 1976-Present A talk by Christina Yu Yu, Assistant Curator, Los Angeles County Museum of Art Tuesday, May 14, 2013 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM Room: Dodd 161, UCLA Emphasizing the diversity and complexity of art making in China, this talk will trace the development of contemporary art in China in the last four decades from the late 1970s to today, including artists working in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and those of the diaspora. Recently there has been an explosion of interest in contemporary art from China. Domestically, the enthusiasm coincides with China’s rapid economic, social, and political transformation. Internationally, such a fascination is partly driven by the country’s rising status in the global economy. Within these frames, Chinese art has largely been seen either as a derivative of Western art, or an extension of the country’s centuries-old art tradition. These approaches have obscured a critical understanding of the trajectory of contemporary Chinese art, and to some degree, perpetuated the misconception that contemporary art in China is mainly market-driven. Identifying several art movements and historicizing their significance, this talk will demonstrate that contemporary art in China is conditioned and shaped by the country’s unique history and culture, which provides a fertile land for artistic experimentations. Christina Yu Yu, Ph.D. is the Assistant Curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Trilingual in Chinese, Japanese, and English, Yu went to LACMA from Chambers Fine Art, where she curated the exhibitions Harmonic Visions: Contemporary Chinese Photogrphy (2009) and Me, Myself, and I (2010). She worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and MoMA, in addition to museum work at the Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan, and the International Center of Photography in New York. Yu obtained her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago. Dear friend: As the first Chinese-American woman mayor in U.S. history, I’ve watched with pride as our Asian-American community has grown and prospered over the decades. Now is the time to broaden our political power. Regardless of our origins or political affiliations, let us come forward in unity and togetherness to help elect the next Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti. Please join me and the Who’s Who of the Asian-American business and political community for a very special event for Eric this Thursday afternoon. Eric is endorsed by the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Business Journal and much of our Asian-American leadership. Sorry for the short notice: it’s because this Thursday is our last chance to push him to victory in the election which is the following Tuesday. Although Eric is the clear front-runner, the election promises to be close enough that our community can make the crucial difference. No matter where we live, the Mayor role is dear to us all as the face of Los Angeles, the city at the heart of all of us with emotional, business and spiritual ties to both Asia and America. We will demonstrate to the gathered media and to the world that we have matured politically, and now are ready to take our rightful place of power. Eric looks forward to sharing his thoughts on the importance of our community as a bridge to Asia. Make sure you are with us on Thursday so everyone knows who you are and understands your commitment to building the future of Los Angeles. On a personal note, I look forward to this wonderful chance to step back from our busy lives to relax, mingle and have fun with so many dear friends and community leaders! Details here: Thursday May 16, 2013 3:30-5:30pm Reception Empress Pavilion Restaurant 988 N Hill Street #201, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (213) 617-9898 RSVP to lilyleechen2012@gmail.com See you Thursday! Warmest regards, Lee Chen
