Nursing - Discipline Input Group Meetings Sponsored by C-ID, ASCCC and HWI South Region: Friday May 4, 2012 Doubletree Hotel Orange/Anaheim North Region: Friday May 11, 2012 Westin Hotel SFO Airport
Dear Nursing Faculty, On behalf of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges and the Course Identification Numbering System (C-ID), which is administered by the Academic Senate, we invite you to attend the Discipline Input Group (“DIG”) meeting in your region to provide input regarding a possible statewide model curriculum for Nursing and C-ID course descriptors for the ADN programs. As you know, with the passage of SB 1440, our colleges have begun to develop new associate degrees for transfer and to date 18 disciplines have developed a Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC). However, legislative mandates together with unit and course requirements place the Registered Nursing major in a unique position. As a result, the State Academic Senate and the C-ID System along with the Health Workforce Initiative are hosting these meetings to support, and assist in coordinating the work of nursing faculty in developing their own version of a statewide model curriculum that might stand alone or could potentially be a part of the SB 1440 implementation. At the core of any statewide effort to coordinate curriculum pathways is the convening of intersegmental discipline faculty, and this is the heart of the C-ID system. Initial meetings to address the ADN transfer curriculum were held this past October, and upcoming May meetings are expected to move us forward as we build and improve upon progress we have already made. Besides SB 1440, the nursing discipline has had to develop a response to AB 1295, and a great deal of work has been done toward achieving that goal. These May meetings will include a summary of the previous work done by nursing faculty regarding AB 1295, C-ID and SB 1440. While these May meetings are for discipline faculty, the C-ID representatives are working with the Health Workforce Initiative director and we will attend the ADN Directors meetings in the fall to get further input. Background about SB 1440 Implementation: The statewide strategy for the TMC is facilitated though the C-ID System. C-ID is a faculty-driven system for colleges and universities to facilitate the identification of comparable courses and increase articulation across all segments of higher education in the state. C-ID addresses the need for a “common course numbering system” to simplify student movement both within the California community colleges and intersegmentally. The basis of C-ID is a set of detailed course “descriptors” for courses that commonly transfer from a California community college to baccalaureate-granting institutions, which are developed by a team of intersegmental faculty. For additional background information on C-ID, please visit http://www.c-id.net/. Sincerely, Jane Patton, Ed.D, C-ID Coordinator
DIG Meeting Goals: 1. Review previous progress made by Nursing discipline; coordinate with other efforts underway. 2. Discuss a model curriculum for the discipline, identifying the list of courses to be vetted statewide. 3. Review C-ID course descriptors & discuss next steps. Location and Registration: SOUTH - May 4, 2012 at Doubletree, 100 The City Drive, Orange 92868 Register: http://tinyurl.com/socaldig2012 NORTH - May 11, 2012 at SFO Westin, 1 Old Bayshore Highway, Millbrae 94030.
