Saving China's Art: The Heiress, the Diplomat and the ''American Emperor''
The Renwen Society at China Institute and the Confucius Institute for Business at SUNY Global Center jointly present an illustrated lecture on Saturday, Oct. 31 by Margaret Stocker, trustee of the India House Foundation, on a book she is writing: Saving China's Art: The Heiress, the Diplomat and the ''American Emperor.'' The heiress, philanthropist and suffragist was Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight, whose fortune flowed from the Standard Oil Company. The diplomat, Willard Straight, collected Indo-Tibetan and Chinese bronzes and wall hangings in Manchuria and Korea while a correspondent for the Associated Press during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 and then through 1911 under the US State Department's "Open Door to China'' policy. The ''American Emperor'' is the title that the 13th Dalai Lama used to refer to Theodore Roosevelt.

Psychological Health Webinar: Using Meta-analysis to Determine the Most Effective Treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

This webinar will review the current guidelines for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at all points in the treatment continuum. It will highlight the significant areas where current major guidelines (VA/DoD, WHO, NICE, APA and ISTSS) are not in agreement including medications versus therapy, individual medications and behavioral therapies. The presenter will discuss variances in the evaluation of data that resulted in these differences and will review an evaluation of current studies in the form of four meta-analyses looking at more than17,000 citations for best evidence-based treatment. McConnell, Chief Innovation Officer of Build To Prosper, a division of MGLLC, a business consulting corporation owned by Cameron, will present during the Finance class session on October 17th 2015. Cam is considered a master at profit creation for business owners throughout the world. Recently Cam has written a book entitled Build To Prosper that reveals the key business secrets (treasures) to attaining sustainable pretax profits to invest in future innovation for business owners. Cam has assisted well over 400 business owners over the past 40 years in accomplishing this goal. These business owners have increased their business market value by more than $2Billion dollars.

In presenting to the MBA Finance class at California Institute of Advanced Management, Cam will dispel the previously touted economic theory of return on investment (ROI) as being no longer relevant and he will offer a new model. This model is based on earning a minimum return of 10% pretax sales not on equity (investment). Cam is the founder in 1978 of his business advising firm, MGLLC and is currently the Chief Innovation Officer of Build to Prosper, a division of MGLLC. After 400 engagements with business owners over the last 37 years, Cam continues to assist owners in increasing their business pre-tax earnings to be sustainable and sufficient to invest in future innovation.

In his new book, “Build To Prosper” he discloses MGLLC’s intellectual property. This intellectual property is the system that is applied by his methodology to successfully obtain a minimum 10% pre-tax profit return on sales. 10月23與24日特別英文講座，主題「贏在終點的大學申請資料」，想聽中文演講10月31日下午1時在Cerritos分校，該校將以中文演講。美國的大學申請所審核的是學生高中四年點點滴滴的整體表現，以及學生參與過的課外活動與學生的個人特質。學生所遞交的申請資料及個人自傳則是對這些所有的要件作一個總結式的整理。當然申請資料本身呈現的品質是否能幫學生加分，把學生的優點放大，缺點縮小，對學生的錄取機會有很大的影響。高中成績好或SAT、AP考試高分都只是過程的一部分，學生要能發揮個人潛力，進入理想大學才是最終極的目標。事實上，有心栽培子女進入理想大學的家長要瞭解這些大學申請的要件，並早點將子女交給經驗豐富的升學專家，訂製一個完整的升學計畫，並一路協助輔導，最後的結果才完美。該校並提供了6到11年級的學校課程及各科AP 課程輔導，強效的ACT、 PSAT、SAT II課程，對學生申請大學的基礎做最紮實的準備。講座為免費入場:

The Politics of Defense: Lawyers and Criminal Justice in China

Professor of Sociology and Law (UW-Madison) Sida Liu explores what motivates Chinese defense attorneys to grapple with the challenges of criminal defense in China. Politics is everywhere in the legal profession, but nowhere is it as strong and complex as in the work of criminal defense lawyers. Lawyers in China encounter great difficulties and personal danger in criminal cases, yet many of them persist in doing criminal defense work. What motivates them to do so? How do they survive in an unfavorable criminal justice system? What are the various strategies that they adopt to mobilize for legal and political change? Based on 329 interviews across the country and a variety of media and archival data collected during a decade of fieldwork in China from 2005 to 2015, this study explains these empirical questions at the key intersection between research on the legal profession, criminal justice, and political change. It also sheds light on two broader questions on China and politics, namely, where go China’s legal and political reforms? And how do lawyers fight for basic legal freedoms in illiberal political societies?

Sida Liu is Assistant Professor of Sociology and Law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Faculty Fellow at the American Bar Foundation. He received his LL.B. degree from Peking University Law School and his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. Professor Liu’s current research interests focus on the sociology of law, organizations and occupations, criminal justice, globalization, and general social theory. He has conducted extensive empirical research on China’s legal reform and legal profession.
