Over the centuries, the Silk Roads were an important conduit for the exchange of products and technologies from China to the West. These exchanges were critical not only for the development and flowering of the great civilizations of Rome, China, and India, but they laid the foundations of our modern world. Silk, paper, and porcelain were three of the most sophisticated products of pre-modern technology. The class will evaluate the importance of these three products as elements in cultural diffusion along the Silk Roads, and each student will make their own paper and bring it home!
