The blending of its unique theme of feminism, depicted poignantly for the first time in Chinese literature, and surpassing poetic writing technique has evoked deep sympathy in readers and has been passionately praised by generations of Chinese over the centuries. This series is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition Dreams of the Kings: A Jade Suit for Eternity, Treasures of the Han Dynasty from Xuzhou. The lecture will be conducted in English. 赵美心 Judy Chu for Congress说:留言于2017-05-23 10:13:53(第12条)
Dear Zhenying,
If you haven''''t already reserved your seats, please join me for a very special occasion to meet Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, for a fundraiser supporting the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Sunday, June 11th from 4-6pm at the Ocean Star Restaurant in Monterey Park. We need this event now more than ever.

Leader Pelosi will speak about the need for Democrats to win a majority in the House in order to break through the stranglehold the Trump administration has on our government. We are only a few months into this term, and the new president has appointed unqualified nominees, signed unconstitutional and inhumane executives orders to restrict travel and roll back environmental protections. In addition, the Congressional and FBI investigations into the Trump campaign and Russia are extremely concerning. We must ensure that these investigations are completed without obstruction from the administration.

Our best hope to keep this administration''''s power in check is to win a majority in the House of Representatives in next year''''s election. Since Republicans currently control the House, Senate and the presidency, it is the only way we can stop the threats to our health care, clean air and water, and civil and voting rights. It is vital that we join together to win back the House in 2018. Your participation in this event will help our congressional candidates across the country. Please join Leader Nancy Pelosi and me to make sure that our candidates have the resources they need to win. If you''''ve already responded, I look forward to seeing you on June 11th!
In friendship,

Judy

The Ancestral Temple《神堂》简介
Tuesday, May 23, 2017, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Bunche Hall 10383, UCLA
A documentary film by Xiao Bo, Lu Min
Narrated in Chinese with English captions

In the process of cultural development, the Baishou Dance, once regarded as a “living fossil” by anthropologists, suffers from “weathering”. Seeing the adapted Baishou Dance being popularized in Shemihu village, Peng Changsong, the senior-generation practitioner of the Baishou Dance, dismisses it as nothing but “buying a casket while discarding the pearl inside”. The documentary of The Ancestral Temple, strung together by stories concerning the preservation and development of the Baishou Dance as reflected in the life situation and conflicts between the old and young generations of Baishou dance practitioners, vividly depicts a genuine and timely portrait of the current conditions of rural society and the changing mentality of villagers.
For most of the villagers, the Shemihu Ancestral Temple which no longer serves as a refuge for their spiritual longings, feels so close at hand yet so far away.

Dr. Min Lu is currently an associate professor in South-Central University for Nationalities in China. In 1999-2012, she worked in Hubei Television Network as a reporter, producer, and a director of documentary, with eight national or international documentary prizes awarded. She is interested in visual anthropology and cross - cultural communication. She is now a visiting scholar in UCLA Center for Chinese Studies.

What Makes a Falsified Text Popular? Writing the 1402 Usurpation in Seventeenth-Century China
Thursday, May 18, 2017,4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
10383 Bunche Hall, UCLA
Taiwan Studies Lecture by Chiung-yun Evelyn Liu, Academia Sinica: My talk is about a current book project, which examines how the 1402 Usurpation, a four-year civil war fought in the early Ming Dynasty, had continued to be reshaped and reinvented in unofficial histories, novels, drama and Confucian textbooks during the 15th and 17th centuries. In particular, it will focus on a pair of accounts of the defeated Jianwen Emperor’s exile, which, despite contemporary and modern historians’ denunciation as “falsified history,” was popular and instrumental in reshaping the late Ming collective memory of this civil war. The talk will analyze the cultural context, memory politics and literary sensibility at work in the late Ming Jiangnan society that effected the fervor for recalling the 1402 Usurpation and discuss the broader implications of such a case study in the field of pre-modern Chinese culture and literature.

The UCLA Taiwan Studies Lectureship is a joint program of the UCLA Asia Pacific Center and the Dean of Humanities and is made possible with funding from the Department of International and Cross-Strait Education, Ministry of Education, Taiwan, represented by the Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles.
