From the Natural to the Instrumental: Theories of the Sounding Voice in China

Thursday, February 08, 2018
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Bunche Hall 10383

Talk by Judith T. Zeitlin, University of Chicago
How was the human voice conceptualized and theorized in China before the advent of the modern era? This talk posits that the default manoeuver in Chinese traditional discourse was to situate the human voice on a continuum with other sounds, rather than isolating it as a separate phenomenon in its own right. This may be one reason why “voice” was seldom deployed as a key metaphor or trope in Chinese thought. At various historical moments, however, the physical, material voice was singled out and valorized above other kinds of sounds. My strategy in this talk, therefore, is to trace the emergence of different models of the voice over time. I begin with two diametrically opposed approaches to the voice in the canonical writings from early China (5th c. BCE to 1st c. CE): an expressive model found in Confucian statements on music and poetry and a physiological model found in the volume on acupuncture in the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon. I locate the major turning point in court literature of the Six Dynasties (3rd to 5th centuries CE), where a model of voice as a natural musical instrument is developed. The final section examines what is arguably the fullest emergence of the autonomous human voice as an analytical category in Chinese discourse: a mid-eighteenth-century work entitled A Pedagogical Treatise for the Operatic Voice (Yuefu chuansheng). Written by the Qing dynasty physician Xu Dachun to promote his method for the singing of Kun opera, the treatise advocates a modern, technical approach to training the voice as an idealized vehicle for repairing a fatal rupture between the musics of the past and present.

Judith T. Zeitlin is William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Chinese Literature in the Department of East Asian Languages & Civilizations and the Committee on Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago. She received her PhD from Harvard in 1988 and taught on the faculty of Cornell and Harvard before moving to Chicago in 1994. Her work combines literary history of the Ming-Qing period with other disciplines, particularly visual and material culture, music and performance, as well as gender studies, medicine and film. Her many publications on Chinese fiction and drama include The Phantom Heroine: Ghosts and Gender in Seventeenth-Century Chinese Literature (2007), and several co-edited works, including a special issue for The Opera Quarterly on “Chinese Opera Film” (2010), Performing Images: Opera in Chinese Visual Culture (2014), and The Voice as Something More: Essays Toward Materiality (under review). She is the recipient of fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS).

Chinese Investment In California: Trends, Players, Worries
Date: Monday, February 8, 2018
Time: 4:00-5:30pm
Location: Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, ASC 207, USC
Free

Beijing-based Oceanwide is one of the Chinese companies who are changing the Los Angeles skyline.

Chinese direct investment in the U.S. reached a record $45 billion in 2016. Over a third of that came to California. The pace and scale of investment dropped in 2017. California still saw nearly $5 billion in new investment. The Rhodium Group has been a leader in documenting and analyzing these trends. Founding partner Daniel Rosen has spoken at the USC U.S.-China Institute a couple of times, including in 2013. On Thursday, Feb. 8, we are delighted to welcome Rhodium Group senior analyst Cassie Gao to speak. She has written extensively on Chinese investment in the U.S. and is especially focused on California. She will discuss the most prominent sectors for Chinese investors and the investors who are making the biggest impact in California.

Cassie Gao is a Senior Analyst at RHG focusing on China''''s international trade and investment flows. Cassie works extensively on Chinese investment into the United States, as well as broader Chinese macroeconomic reform dynamics. Previously, Cassie worked with the Albright Stonebridge Group''''s China Practice covering healthcare reform and agriculture policy. She has a Bachelor''''s in Economics from Cornell University and a Master''''s in International Affairs from George Washington University.

Rhodium Group (RHG) combines policy experience, quantitative economic tools and on-the-ground research to analyze disruptive global trends. Our work supports the investment management, strategic planning and policy analysis needs of clients in the financial, corporate, non-profit and government sectors. RHG has offices in New York, California and Hong Kong, and associates in Washington and New Delhi.

美国年度最神奇新闻事件排行榜出炉——
【金牌奖】
JAMES ELLIOT——

Spring School - COMPLEX NETWORKS: THEORY, METHODS, AND APPLICATIONS
Lake Como School of Advanced Studies
Villa del Grumello, Como, Italy, 14-18 May 2018
http://ntmd.lakecomoschool.org/
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: February 18, 2018

Many real systems can be modeled as networks, where the elements of the system are nodes and interactions between elements are edges. An even larger set of systems can be modeled using dynamical processes on networks, which are in turn affected by the dynamics. Networks thus represent the backbone of many complex systems, and their theoretical and computational analysis makes it possible to gain insights into numerous applications. Networks permeate almost every conceivable discipline---including sociology, transportation, economics and finance, biology, and myriad others---and the study of "network science" has thus become a crucial component of modern scientific education.

The school "Complex Networks: Theory, Methods, and Applications" offers a succinct education in network science. It is open to all aspiring scholars in any area of science or engineering who wish to study networks of any kind (whether theoretical or applied), and it is especially addressed to doctoral students and young postdoctoral scholars. The aim of the school is to deepen into both theoretical developments and applications in targeted fields.

Dear CESASC Members, Friends and Students,

On behalf of the Chinese-American Engineers and Scientists Association of Southern California (CESASC) Scholarship Committee, I would like to inform you that the 2018 CESASC Scholarship is open for application. The deadline is February 15, 2018.

CESASC is one of the largest and the most established Chinese-American professional organizations in Southern California. Founded in 1962, CESASC has been dedicated to promote interests, aspirations, and professional excellence of Chinese-American engineers and scientists. CESASC provides career and educational advancement opportunities, technical exchange, fellowship and community service. In particular, CESASC offers annual scholarships to encourage young students to develop their interests and pursue their careers in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

All scholarship recipients will be invited to the CESASC Annual Convention and network with professionals in the fields. Graduate student recipients may also be invited to present their research work at the CESASC Annual Convention. Each scholarship recipient will be paired up with a mentor who is a CESASC member.

In the past eight years, CESASC gave away more than $70,000 in scholarships awarded to more than eighty excellent students. The 2018 Scholarship application form and FAQ files are attached for your convenience. More information and updates about CESASC and the Scholarship can be found at www.cesasc.org. All applications should be submitted online at http://cesasc.org/content/2018-cesasc-scholarship-application or via email to scholarship@cesasc.org.

The awardees will be announced at the end of March, 2018. Awardees must attend in person the annual convention events to receive the awards. Awardees are also required to join CESASC as a member, commit themselves to volunteer at CESASC STEM program (e.g., mentoring middle/high school participants of STEM essay contest), and help organizing future CESASC events and annual conventions. Regardless of the final results, we encourage all applicants stay involved and participate in future CESASC activities, and be part of CESASC family.
