A Frenchman today became the first limbless person to swim the Channel.

Philippe Croizon set off from Folkestone, in Kent, at around 6am yesterday, expecting to reach France within 24 hours, but managed to complete the feat in only 13 and a half.

The 42-year-old''''s arms and legs had to be amputated after he suffered an electric shock while removing a television aerial from a roof 16 years ago.

He taught himself to swim in the last two years, and does so using prosthetic legs and a snorkel and mask.

Earlier, Croizon''''s spokeswoman said he was swimming faster than expected after completing his first 12 miles in just eight hours.

After completing the 21-mile challenge last night, Croizon told the BBC he had never felt that he was not going to make it, despite aches and pains all over his body.

The Science in Society conference addresses the social impacts, values, pedagogies, politics and economics of science. It is an inclusive forum that welcomes a breadth of perspectives on science from practitioners, teachers and researchers representing a wide range of academic disciplines.

If you are unable to attend the conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in this fully refereed academic journal, as well as access to the electronic version of the conference proceedings. You are also able to upload a presentation to the conference You Tube Channel.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 21 September 2010. Future deadlines will be announced on the conference website after this date. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. 哈佛大學人類學研究所副教授馮文（Vanessa Fong），應邀於15日晚間在拉斯維加斯大學（UNLV）演講，她的講題是「中國留學生海外求學移民之路」，以她從1999年開始的資料收集以及追蹤結果作說明，歡迎各界前往聽講。

馮文教授曾於1997年前往中國東北大連市開始研究中國一胎化政策下成長的孩子，他一共研究2273名中國1979年至1986年間出生的孩子，並追蹤這些研究對象至今的生活及工作和教育及觀點。

• 亚利桑那州华人华侨声援全球保钓行动筹备委员会成立

今日亚省保钓行动筹备会在亚利桑那州立大学如期举行。来自中国大陆、台湾、香港、中国留美学生代表参加了筹备会议。
侨界代表认为钓鱼岛自古以来是中国领土的一部分。日本不断挑起事端使钓鱼岛事件陷入僵局。现今，福建渔船被扣，14船员被押。虽然已释放13名船员，船长仍然扣押。海外华人华侨对此事给予强烈关注。海外华侨的命运于祖国紧紧相联，台湾香港以及全球各地的华人华侨已经行动起来，进行了各种形式的声援活动。值得一提的是，就在这周六，旧金山、洛杉矶等地的华人华侨、中国留美学生们将在日本领事馆举行集会、游行，进行抗议活动。亚省的华人华侨及留学生也不甘人后，顺应历史潮流，为维护祖国领土主权不容侵犯，勇敢站出来，参与到活动的声援队伍中，充分体现了海内外炎黄子孙捍卫保钓行动的坚定意志和决心。
中国留美学生方面认为，此时我们有“三个必须”。第一，必须让我们这一代人了解历史，深化认识，提高对历史事件，当代国际局势的敏感度。第二，必须发出正义、果敢的声音，向日本政府抗议，维护国家和民族的利益。
第三，必须承担我们的历史使命，秣马厉兵，厚积薄发。在将来为祖国和民族的统一大业做出应有的贡献。
在此会议期间，侨学界达成以下几点共识：
