Covering China from the Ground Up
Talk by Michael Meyer
Monday, March 02, 2015
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Bunche Hall 10383
In Manchuria: A Village Called Wasteland and the Transformation of Rural China
Since first arriving in the country as a Peace Corps volunteer 20 years ago, Michael Meyer has witnessed and written about the transformation of China, at the level of both an urban neighborhood and a remote village. His award-winning first book “The Last Days of Old Beijing” documented changes in the daily life in the capital’s oldest neighborhood as the city remade itself for the 2008 Olympics. In his second book “In Manchuria: A Village Called Wasteland and the Transformation of Rural China” he describes the experience of his wife’s relatives as their family rice farm developed into a corporate agribusiness.

Amplifying the story of family and Wasteland, Meyer -- via photographs -- will take us on a journey across Manchuria’s past, a history that explains much about contemporary China—from the fall of the last emperor to Japanese occupation and Communist victory. Meyer will also talk about the challenges of reporting from China and how a freelance writer can fund and produce books that reach a wide audience.

Michael Meyer first went to China in 1995 with the Peace Corps. As the author of the acclaimed The Last Days of Old Beijing, he received a Whiting Writers’ Award for nonfiction, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has also won a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers. Meyer’s stories have appeared in the New York Times, Time, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, Slate, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and on This American Life. He teaches nonfiction writing at the University of Pittsburgh and spends the offseason in Singapore.

3/4/2015 - In Manchuria: A Village Called Wasteland and the Transformation of Rural China
Social Sciences Building, SOS B40
University of Southern California,Los Angeles, CA 90089
Time: 4:00 - 5:30PM
Cost: Free, please click here to RSVP.
For three years, Michael Meyer rented a home in the rice-farming community of Wasteland, hometown to his wife's family. Their personal saga mirrors the tremendous change most of rural China is undergoing, in the form of a privately held rice company that has built new roads, introduced organic farming, and constructed high-rise apartments into which farmers can move in exchange for their land rights. Once a commune, Wasteland is becoming a company town.
Amplifying the story of family and Wasteland, Meyer -- via photographs -- will take us on a journey across Manchuria's past, a history that explains much about contemporary China-from the fall of the last emperor to Japanese occupation and Communist victory. Through vivid local characters, Meyer illuminates the remnants of the imperial Willow Palisade, Russian and Japanese colonial cities and railways, and the POW camp into which a young American sergeant parachuted to free survivors of the Bataan Death March. In Manchuria is a rich and original chronicle of contemporary China and its people. The book will be available for purchase at the event.

About the Speaker
Michael Meyer first went to China in 1995 with the Peace Corps. Meyer has also received a Lowell Thomas Award for excellence in travel writing. His stories have appeared in the New York Times, Time, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, Slate, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and on This American Life. Meyer is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh, where he teaches nonfiction writing.

Interpreting Cultural Exchange along China’s Northern Frontier in the Third Century BCE
Talk by Xiaolong Wu, Hanover College
Thursday, February 26, 2015
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Dodd Hall 161
Focusing on the recently discovered Majiayuan cemetery in Gansu Province, this talk discusses the rich remains in those tombs in the context of contemporaneous finds along China’s Northern Frontier as well as those further west on the Eurasian steppe. The highly mixed and innovative cultural phenomena observable in those finds are analyzed in relation to cultural hybridity and the Post-colonial paradigm, revealing social and economic implications of the cultural exchange between China and its northern pastoral neighbors. Xiaolong Wu studied Chinese Archaeology at Peking University and received a PhD in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently Associate Professor of Art History at Hanover College in Indiana. His research focuses on Chinese art and archaeology of the late Zhou period and is specifically concerned with the role of material culture in the construction of political and cultural identities. His book manuscript titled Material Culture and Political Power in Ancient China: Archaeology and History of the Zhongshan State is currently under the second round of review with Cambridge University Press.

I consider the Lunar New Year is more appropriate in a multiculturalism Australia.
Tony P.说:留言于2015-02-20 14:51:58(第8条)
Dear Friends
To call the festivities Lunar New Year is a more accurate from an astronomical/astrological point and does not convey the meaning that Chinese are now being excluded or somehow offended, it means that other cultures, who also recognise the tradition, are now included. It makes no real practical difference in the way that Chinese or other cultural groups celebrate the occasion by simply referring to the festivities as the Lunar New Year.
Perhaps, insofar as the naming issue goes the term Lunar could be the generic title and if any particular cultural group wants to have an exclusive celebration they could title their festivities, for example; Chinese Lunar New Year or Vietnamese (TET) Lunar New Year.
However once the festivities are in the public domain it is necessary for those festivities to be referred to as Lunar New Year. This is an accurate title and vital to the objects of multiculturalism in Australia. It should not be a case of whoever funds the occasion should get the naming rights, this outcome would be detrimental to fostering harmonious multicultural relations and hints of a vested interest.”

Dear Friends
Happy Chinese New Year and best wishes all.
On the subject of "Chinese New Year", many of you had rightly voiced your disapproval with Sydney City Council last year that Sydney's Chinese New Year festivities should in future be re-badged as the Lunar New Year.
While we respect the rights of other communities to brand their new year in whatever terms of their preferences, I trust we will all continue to fight vociferously and remind Sydney City Council that our community does not want Chinese New Year to be known as anything else.
Sydney has celebrated Chinese New Year for over 150 years and we are entitled to continue to celebrate Chinese New Year as we've always known it, in the years to come. Other communities are entitled naturally to brand their own new year celebrations under whatever descriptions they wish to. It is a timely reminder that Chinese New Year is an internationally accepted description of our new year. This is the case in so many different parts of the world where people of Chinese ancestry are found.
Long live Chinese New Year.
