Conspicuous Dharma: Han Chinese Practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism in the PRC - Talk by John Osburg, University of Rochester
Wednesday, March 9, 2016
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Bunche Hall 10383, UCLA
In the context of a perceived spiritual and moral crisis in Chinese society, growing numbers of Han Chinese are turning to Tibetan Buddhism for ethical guidance. This talk is based on an ethnographic study of a group of wealthy, urban Han Chinese who have become followers of Tibetan Buddhism and patrons of reincarnated lamas and charismatic Tibetan monks. I will examine the sources of the appeal of Tibetan Buddhism for wealthy Chinese and the range of ways in which they integrate Buddhist principles and ritual practice into their lives. For some, donations to monks serve as a form of “spiritual protection money” that will safeguard their businesses and enhance their careers, while for others Buddhist principles become the basis for dramatic moral and social transformation. John Osburg is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Rochester, USA. His is the author of Anxious Wealth: Money and Morality Among China’s New Rich (Stanford, 2013). His research interests include morality, political corruption, gender and sexuality, and spirituality in contemporary China. His current research examines wealthy Han Chinese who have become followers and patrons of Tibetan Buddhism.

“Perils of Social Perception: Implications for Leadership and Professional Development”
- Dr. Yarrow Dunham, Professor at Yale
Wednesday, March 9th - 6PM
(Video Conference Room)
While we all acknowledge that other people are frequently biased in their judgments of others, we tend to think that we ourselves are not, a phenomenon that has beed dubbed "the bias blindspot." In fact few of us are free of bias in our social judgments. In my presentation I will focus on the special case of unintentional or "implicit" bias, and discuss its implications for cases central to leadership such as hiring, promotion, and creating a positive work environment. Finally, I will discuss some simple ways in which we can reduce or eliminate our own biases, improving both our ethical and professional outcomes. Contacting (626)350-1500.

The Effect of Early Western Movies and Theatre on China
Sunday, March 20th, 2:00PM-4:00PM
40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006
The introduction of early Western theatre and movies into China in the 1850s and 1890s respectively contributed to an unprecedented cultural blending between the East and the West. Prof. Tang Zhenhai, a literary critic, will analyze the effect on China by revealing how the Western theatre and movies forced their way into a closed country and were readily embraced by the public.

Please join the USC U.S.-China Institute for a discussion of key issues involving the South China Sea and its disputed islands.
What: South China Sea: Conflict or Cooperation?
When: Friday, March 4, 2016, 10am-noon
Where: ASC 207, Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, USC Campus
Cost: Free
For an area with the tiniest of populations, the South China Sea certainly gets a lot of attention from world leaders, military strategists, shippers, energy and fisheries planners, and the general public. A number of countries lay claim to islands and rocks in the 1.4 million square mile region. Much of the oil that powers the economies of China, Japan, and South Korea passes through the area. So does a huge share of global trade. China's built air strips, the Philippines has gone to court, Vietnam and China have sparred over oil exploration, the United States has sailed ships and flown planes near the disputed islands and rocks, and last month, Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou visited an island controlled by Taiwan's military, but claimed by three other governments. The region deserves the attention its getting. The event is sponsored by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the U.S.-China Forum.

The Red Cross Rejects Campaign Was a Success! You Made it Possible! Our end of the year fund drive to save five children who were abandoned by the large foundations like the Red Cross has been successful beyond our expectations. Thirty thousand dollars were raised and all of these children can now be helped. We thank you, our donors for your kind generosity. There are so many children like the five you helped to save last year. We are hoping that your generosity will continue into 2016. Her Heart is Failing and She Needs Your Help! Xiao Wang is a 15 year old girl from Zhaotong Prefecture in Yunnan Province. Her Mom and Dad are farmers and their income is only 5,000 Yuan ($800) per year. She has severe leakage of one of her heart valves which is abnormally formed (tricuspid valve incompetence). This condition is relatively rare and surgical treatment is expensive and can only be done is special centers. Xiao Wang is frequently short of breath and cannot participate in physical education or dance classes though her dream is to learn Chinese and Western classical ballet. Fortunately, Xiao Wang can receive excellent surgical treatment from Professor Wu Qin Yu of Beijing’s Qing Hua University Hua Xin affiliate hospital. China California Heart Watch was able to raise $3,000 at a benefit dinner for Xiao Wang on January 24 but she needs another $7,000 to cover the cost of her surgical treatment in Beijing. Make a donation now or visit our donation page (www.chinacal.org) and annotate on the donation page your wish to support surgery for Xiao Wang.
1. If you donate between $1,000 and $4,000, I personally will match your sponsorship donations so that we can save Little Wang.
2. If you donate 150 dollars or more, we will send to you a beautiful tote bag like this:
3. If you live in the Orange County area and donate at least $500 during the month of February, Professor Lin Shin of the UCI department of Cell Biology and a known master in Tai Chi and Qi Gong, will give you a free half day lesson in the basics of Tai Chi on the UCI campus on a Tuesday at his convenience and yours. This is an unprecedented opportunity to be introduced to this art: www.chinacal.org

The Age of Irreverence: A New History of Laughter in China
Thursday, March 03, 2016
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Bunche Hall 10383
Christopher Rea, University of British Columbia
China's entry in modernity was not just traumatic, but uproarious. As the Qing last dynasty fell, prominent writers compiled jokes to form collections called “histories of laughter.” In the first years of the republic, novelists, essayists, and illustrators used humorous allegories to make veiled critiques of the new government. Yet political and cultural discussion repeatedly erupted into invective, with critics gleefully jeering rivals in public. Farceurs drew followings in the popular press, promoting a culture of buffoonery. These expressions of hilarity proved so offensive to high-brow writers that they launched a campaign in the 1930s to displace old forms of mirth with a new one they called youmo(humor). What can we learn about history from those who laugh their way through it? Focusing on the case of China, this talk will discuss how political turmoil, new media, and other forces nurtured cultures of humor in a modernizing society, from the last days of empire to the digital age.
Christopher Rea is Associate Professor of Asian Studies and Director of the Centre for Chinese Research at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He is author of The Age of Irreverence: A New History of Laughter in China (California, 2015); editor of China’s Literary Cosmopolitans: Qian Zhongshu, Yang Jiang, and the World of Letters (Brill, 2015) and Humans, Beasts, and Ghosts: Stories and Essays by Qian Zhongshu (Columbia, 2011); and coeditor, with Nicolai Volland, of The Business of Culture: Cultural Entrepreneurs in China and Southeast Asia. He is currently translating, with Bruce Rusk, a Ming dynasty story collection called The Book of Swindles.

The 14th International Ethnographic Film Festival, which is going to be on the weekend of March 4-5th 2016, hosted by USC. This film festival is a biennial film festival originally hosted in Great Britain by the Royal Anthropological Institute, and then the Center for Visual Anthropology of USC hosts the LA venue. We did the 13th one in 2014 at USC. That was a great success. This year’s film festival is going to a great one. We basically only screen the reward winners, which makes the fest more compact and attractive.
Another special feature of this year’s festival is that we have a section focusing on China and East Asian issues. We think it’s gonna be really interesting for East Asian scholars to come and participate in the discussions about the films. There will be good receptions, speeches and Q&As during the screenings. Now everything is ready to go. We believe it’s going to be a great event. Please spread the words to more Chinese or Asian scholars who would be interested.
Thanks a lot.

Know China! The Silk Roads: East-West Exchange: Silk, Paper, and Porcelain
Schedule: Saturday, March 5th, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Seats Limited: 20
Location: 40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006
The Silk Road is a historically important international trade route between China and the Mediterranean. Over the centuries, the Silk Roads were an important conduit for the exchange of products and technologies from China to the West. These exchanges were critical not only for the development and flowering of the great civilizations of Rome, China, and India, but they laid the foundations of our modern world. Silk, paper, and porcelain were three of the most sophisticated products of pre-modern technology. The class will evaluate the importance of these three products as elements in cultural diffusion along the Silk Roads, and each student will make their own paper and bring it home!
