FDA has recently approved the Aptima HBV Quant assay to be marketed. This is a laboratory test designed to measure the amount of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in plasma or serum from patients with an HBV infection. Viral DNA is the genetic material from HBV.

The 2018 CESASC Scholarship application has been extended to Feb. 28, 2018.

CESASC is one of the largest and the most established Chinese-American professional organizations in Southern California. Founded in 1962, CESASC has been dedicated to promote interests, aspirations, and professional excellence of Chinese-American engineers and scientists. CESASC provides career and educational advancement opportunities, technical exchange, fellowship and community service. In particular, CESASC offers annual scholarships to encourage young students to develop their interests and pursue their careers in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

All scholarship recipients will be invited to the CESASC Annual Convention and network with professionals in the fields. Graduate student recipients may also be invited to present their research work at the CESASC Annual Convention. Each scholarship recipient will be paired up with a mentor who is a CESASC member.

In the past eight years, CESASC gave away more than $70,000 in scholarships awarded to more than eighty excellent students. The 2018 Scholarship application form and FAQ files are attached for your convenience. More information and updates about CESASC and the Scholarship can be found at www.cesasc.org. All applications should be submitted to scholarship@cesasc.org.

The awardees will be announced at the end of March, 2018. Awardees must attend in person the annual convention events to receive the awards. Awardees are also required to join CESASC as a member, commit themselves to volunteer at CESASC STEM program (e.g., mentoring middle/high school participants of STEM essay contest), and help organizing future CESASC events and annual conventions. Regardless of the final results, we encourage all applicants stay involved and participate in future CESASC activities, and be part of CESASC family.

The 26th Nonlinear Dynamics of Electronic Systems conference will be held in Acireale, a baroque town nearby Catania, 11-13 June 2018. The conference will be held in the Library and Pinacotheca of the "Accademia di Scienze, Lettere e Belle Arti degli Zelanti e dei Dafnici" of Acireale, one of the European most ancient Academies, founded in 1671. The Library and Pinacotheca "Zelantea" houses a collection of ancient archaeological manufacts, scrolls and manuscripts and a relevant section of paintings and fine arts. 今天美国国内最大的新闻就是川普总统终于公布了大家期待已久的基础设施计划。在这份长达53页的文件中详细阐述了他振兴美国基础设施的愿景：在未来十年内将2000亿美元的联邦资金通过利用地方和州税收以及私人投资转化为1.5万亿美元，来修复美国的基础设施。这一计划的要点如下：
1. 这个联邦资金中的一半（即一千亿美元）将被分配给地方政府作为激励措施。另外的200亿美元将用于“能够提升美国精神”的“具有国家意义的项目”，如纽约哈德逊河下的盖特威隧道。另外还有500亿美元专门用于农村补贴，其中大部分将根据农村公路数量和农村人口给予各州；各州可以将这笔钱用于运输，宽带，水，废物和电力项目。

Remodulin (or Treprostinil) is a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries that go from the heart to the lungs).

Beijing-based Oceanwide is one of the Chinese companies who are changing the Los Angeles skyline.
Chinese direct investment in the U.S. reached a record $45 billion in 2016. Over a third of that came to California. The pace and scale of investment dropped in 2017. California still saw nearly $5 billion in new investment. The Rhodium Group has been a leader in documenting and analyzing these trends. Founding partner Daniel Rosen has spoken at the USC U.S.-China Institute a couple of times, including in 2013. On Thursday, Feb. 8, we are delighted to welcome Rhodium Group senior analyst Cassie Gao to speak. She has written extensively on Chinese investment in the U.S. and is especially focused on California. She will discuss the most prominent sectors for Chinese investors and the investors who are making the biggest impact in California.

Cassie Gao is a Senior Analyst at RHG focusing on China''''s international trade and investment flows. Cassie works extensively on Chinese investment into the United States, as well as broader Chinese macroeconomic reform dynamics. Previously, Cassie worked with the Albright Stonebridge Group''''s China Practice covering healthcare reform and agriculture policy. Dear Colleague,

SIMIODE (Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations and Opportunities in Differential Equations) is pleased to announce its 2018 Student Competition Using Differential Equation Modeling (SCUDEM) on Saturday, 21 April 2018, at Azusa Pacific University (APU), one of over 95 competition sites nationwide. We invite you to sponsor a three student team with one faculty coach. Schools can sponsor more than one team and coach.

The competition begins when students are given access to three modeling questions on the morning of 13 April 2018. The team will then select one problem for which they will build a mathematical model, write a two page Executive Summary, and prepare a 10 minute Presentation. Faculty coaches only need to ensure students have time, space, and resources to work on these problems. Faculty may not assist the students with the actual problem solving.

On Saturday, April 21, all participating teams and coaches will gather at APU, where students will spend the morning incorporating one additional issue into their model presentation while faculty engage in a workshop designed to encourage and support the use of modeling in teaching differential equations. Faculty and peer judging will culminate in awards and recognition of student work at the end of the day with a 4:30 PM closing ceremony to permit safe journey back home.

There will also be a fun MathBowl for individual student competition.

There is a $200 registration fee for each team (schools may register more than one team). This includes the faculty development workshop for coach and competition for student teams. Lunch will be on a pay as you go basis in the campus dining facility. Registration fees must be paid through SIMIODE''''s PayPal portal which will be open and dedicated to registration from 1 February - 1 April 2018. We hope you will share this information specifically with those teaching differential equations and modeling classes.
