China Call Report说:留言于2016-04-10 02:39:30(第32条)
The Two Sessions concluded in mid-March in Beijing again set the tone for the country's development direction for the years to come. The growth target of 6.5-7% will be the new normal with building a moderately prosperous society in all respects as China's goal. International trade and cooperation can play an even more acute role in China's focus on domestic consumption as well as its outbound investment activities.

The Female Chieftain's Tribute
Tuesday, April 12, 2016
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Bunche Hall 6275
Talk by Hu Siao-chen, Academia Sinica
Taiwan Studies Lecture Series
During the long history of encounters between the Han and non-Han people, the Han writers produced many texts that represent the non-Han as the other. These texts are in the genres of local gazetteers, travelogues and miscellaneous notes, and they narrate about the geographical, institutional and social traits of the non-Han regions and people. Among the profuse information they provide, the description of local produce and food often goes beyond factual record and is loaded with feeling and imagination. This essay centers around texts about the negotiation between She Xiang, a female chieftain in Guizhou, and the first emperor of the Ming dynasty, and discusses how clothing and food are represented as symbolic tokens of political exchanges between the leaders of the court and the borderland. As buckwheat, the main food crop of the region, is used to make the “golden crispy cake” that bears the pattern of nine dragons and presented to the emperor himself as the female chieftain’s tribute, the story of She Xiang is transformed from strategic negotiation between the central authority and borderland power to a side dish of exotic flavor in the feast of "multi-ethnic unified empire."

How to become a Daoist: Transmission and Ordination in Early Medieval Daoism
Thursday, April 14, 2016
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Bunche Hall 10383
Talk by Terry Kleeman, University of Colorado
Like most new religions, the Way of the Celestial Master, founded in the mid-second century of our era, was an evangelical faith that sought to save the world by converting its profane inhabitants to the true way. For this reason, there is a strong focus in early Daoist documents on conversion of individuals and their incorporation into the membership as citizens of the Dao (Daomin 道民). In fact, the movement experienced explosive growth over the next two hundred fifty years, as it came to cover all of Sichuan, then all of North China, and finally, after 317, all of China. This talk will examine how individuals and families were recruited for membership in the Celestial Master church, how they were evaluated for promotion and progressed through the ranks, the rituals used to initiate and ordain them at various levels, and the codes of conduct that they accepted along with their ranks and statuses. In this way, we can get some sense of what it meant to turn away from popular religious practice and join into this new fellowship of the Heavenly People (tianren 天人), to live under different rules worshipping strange new gods, and to share in the hope that they would be chosen as Seed People who would repopulate the world of Great Peace that was sure to arise from the ashes of the destruction, warfare, plague, and calamity that surrounded them.

40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006
Event Fee: Members - Free, Non-Members - $5
Beginning in 1966, China's Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution was a mass movement that shook the foundations of Modern China to its core. The movement's ubiquitous presence deeply disrupted all aspects of Chinese society, and has had a lasting impact on Chinese culture that is still present today.
On May 3, 2016, join China Institute in collaboration with Asia Art Archive for a screening of China - The Red Sons (1968, 47 mins), shot by Australian filmmaker Roger Whittaker during a trip to China in 1968 organized by the Australian Union of University Students. One of the few documentaries made in China during the Cultural Revolution, the film offers a unique record of people's daily lives in this period, featuring interviews with students, pupils, Red Guards and the late Anna Louise Strong. Following the screening, renowned curator, Zheng Shengtian, and Jane DeBevoise, Chair of the Board of Directors, Asia Art Archive will host a discussion. What: Confucius And The World He Created
When: Thursday, April 7, 2016, 4:00-5:30pm
Where: ANN 106, Wallis Annenberg Hall, USC Campus
Cost: Free, please register here.
Confucius is perhaps the most important philosopher in history. Today, his teachings shape the daily lives of more than 1.6 billion people. Throughout East Asia, Confucius's influence can be seen in everything from business practices and family relationships to educational standards and government policies. Even as western ideas from Christianity to Communism have bombarded the region, Confucius's doctrine has endured as the foundation of East Asian culture. It is impossible to understand East Asia, journalist Michael Schuman demonstrates, without first engaging with Confucius and his vast legacy.

Confucius created a worldview that is in many respects distinct from, and in conflict with, Western culture. As Schuman shows, the way that East Asian companies are managed, how family members interact with each other, and how governments see their role in society all differ from the norm in the West due to Confucius's lasting impact. Confucius has been credited with giving East Asia an advantage in today''''s world, by instilling its people with a devotion to learning, and propelling the region's economic progress. Still, the sage has also been highly controversial. For the past 100 years, East Asians have questioned if the region can become truly modern while Confucius remains so entrenched in society. He has been criticized for causing the inequality of women, promoting authoritarian regimes, and suppressing human rights. Despite these debates, East Asians today are turning to Confucius to help them solve the ills of modern life more than they have in a century. As a wealthy and increasingly powerful Asia rises on the world stage, Confucius, too, will command a more prominent place in global culture. Touching on philosophy, history, and current affairs, Confucius tells the vivid, dramatic story of the enigmatic philosopher whose ideas remain at the heart of East Asian civilization.

U.S. Supreme Court's Tie Vote Affirms Lower Court Decision in Favor of CTA!
In a 4-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a judgment March 29 affirming the lower court ruling in favor of CTA in the Friedrichs v. CTA lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of fair share fees. The loss of fair share would have hurt working families by silencing the collective voice of faculty and other union members. In a media statement, NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia said, "The U.S. Supreme Court today rejected a political ploy to silence public employees like teachers, school bus drivers, cafeteria workers, higher education faculty and other educators to work together to shape their profession."

Board of Governors Votes to Replace ACCJ
The California Community Colleges Board of Governors will seek a new accreditor to replace the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), which has come under fire from faculty organizations throughout the state. During the transition period – anticipated to take a few years – the board expects the ACCJC to make improvements in its current process. "We have moved from fear and intimidation to empowerment. This is a testament to democracy, where all segments of the community college system worked together to bring about change, change which will above all benefit our students," said CCA President Lynette Nyaggah.

With the CSU administration refusing to budge, the 26,000-member CFA is continuing its plans for a five-day strike April 13-15 and April 18-19. Read the statement by CTA President Eric Heins on the fact-finding report and find ways you can support the CFA in its struggle.

Dear Professor,
We sincerely invite you to attend Seminar on Bilingual Digital Publishing of Asian Studies Journals
March 31, 2016, 4:00pm--5:30pm
Sheraton Hotel, Aspen Room, 1400 6th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101 (next door to the Washington State Convention Center.)
Asian Studies has attracted the attention of scholars worldwide, who are in urgent need of China's latest researches and academic findings. Under the circumstances, it is imperative that China’s top academic journals be translated into English and published bilingually. It will help overseas readers to use their native or familiar language in China studies and improve their researching efficiency, meanwhile help the East Asian libraries to expand their services in short time.
Journal Translation Project (JTP), launched by CNKI in 2012, will finally come on the stage of AAS with great performance. After three years’ development, JTP has grown much stronger and more mature. With respect to journal and article selection, it presents international research findings from top Chinese scholars based on scientific big-data analysis and professional evaluation. As for the translation, all the articles are translated by overseas scholars with excellent academic background and proficiency in Chinese-English translation, and polished by native speakers in the position of assistant (or higher) professor. Concerning the product design, it adopts the most advanced XML technology in an international style, which will optimize the user experience for scholars.
We are more than honored to have chief editors of these journals, translators, quality control experts and designers with us in the seminar and exchange ideas on the bilingual publishing of Asian Studies journals. Australians are living longer and healthier lives, and it is important that as Australians age, they retain control over choices about their care. Australia has one of the best aged care systems in the world. There are many different types of aged care services available, many of which are government-funded. At some point in time, many people may have to look after an older family member who has become frail, suffers a chronic health condition or has dementia. Do you want to learn more about the practical, financial and emotional supports and services available to help you and the person you are caring for?
AMSA is pleased to announce the third talk in our new series of community seminars for our members. The purpose of these seminars is to help our members get the most out of your health and wealth. As always, we love it when our members can benefit the most from being part of our association.
