"Growing Into Governance" by Rich Davis
Are you an entrepreneur, looking for external funding? Investment comes with strings attached, are you prepared?
Are you expanding your business by hiring additional staff, creating new products, or expanding internal support services?
How will you keep them all on track?
Learn how to govern your business more effectively
Governance simply defines the relationships between those that decide what a business should be doing and those that do the business; from the relationship between business ownership (capital) and management that sets business strategy to internal governance mechanisms that translate strategy into results. While most governance processes follow a similar form, each business that grows beyond the individual entrepreneur should tailor this general form to their own unique situation. Some businesses do this successfully, while others struggle to achieve the desired balance between openness, effectiveness, and economy. This presentation will provide the entrepreneur, as well as established businesses, with an understanding of the purpose and characteristics of governance, as well as essential considerations for establishing effective governance mechanisms for their growing business.
About the Speaker: Richard Davis is the Director of the InSoCalConnect International Division's Governance & Compliance Institute. He has more than 30 years' experience working within (and improving) the established governance frameworks of major corporations and establishing practical and effective governance mechanisms within start-up businesses and non-profit organizations. He is a member of ISACA and is in the process of earning their Certification in the Governance of Enterprise Information Technology (CGEIT).

Talk by Chen Honglin, Fudan Univerisity
Tuesday, April 19, 2016,4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Bunche Hall Room 10383,UCLA
An important part of long-term care system in China are the services provided by community caregivers associated with older peoples’ quality of life. In order to understand the nature of caregiving experiences among community-based caregivers for the elderly and to identify critical factors that affect those experiences; we employed a qualitative approach to study community-based caregivers in a selected community in Pudong, Shanghai, in southeastern China. Semi-structured in-depth interviews and focus group interviews were conducted among 20 community-based caregivers in the spring of 2015.
Chen Honglin is an associate professor and the vice chair at the Department of Social Work, Fudan university. She has been working in the research area on family, aging, social capital, and social services for the past few years and has published more than 20 papers internationally. She is good at conducting quantitative and qualitative research methodology in social research. She is a good partner for teamwork and has been actively engaged in a few interdisciplinary research projects. She has a stout belief on transferring research knowledge to practical world and has been engaging in many community services.

The Graduation of CIAM Class of 2016

You have read about him, but now is your opportunity to meet our extraordinary graduation speaker:
Bill Bartmann has led an extraordinary life. After falling down darkened stairs resulting in his becoming a paraplegic, his doctors told him he would that he would never leave a bed. Disregarding doctor’s orders, he not only learned to sit up, stand, and walk, he earned a black belt in karate and even wrestled Hulk Hogan.. . and won!. After going to college and earning a law degree, he entered into a business that usually ranks pretty low in reputation: the credit/collection industry. Refusing to hire employees who disrespected creditors, he changed the paradigm of the entire industry. Instead of treating individuals as deadbeats trying to avoid paying their debts, he organized an entire business around the idea of helping people get back on their feet, thereby allowing them not only to pay their overdue bills, but to gain dignity and respect and even to regain their credit ratings! His recovery rate for unpaid bill collection soared and he became a billionaire. Forbes listed him as the 25th wealthiest man in the United States, right ahead of Ross Perot.

Then tragedy struck. Due to a government mistake he lost his entire business, which at its peak employed 3700 individuals, and he was forced to declare bankruptcy. It took more than ten years and practically every cent that he had to prove the government wrong and to win an apology and his reputation, but he succeeded. Bill Bartmann started all over again and reclaimed his billionaire status. He founded new companies and devoted his life to lobbying state and federal lawmakers to change the outdated debt collection model. He wrote a bestselling book, “Bouncing Back” which described his journey. Most recently he advised President Obama in Washington, and CIAM was honored to recommend him as a member of its Board of Trustees. Bill’s extraordinary life story is one for the movies. But you don’t need to wait for Hollywood, you can meet him face-to-face and shake his hand. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet him personally when he flies in from Oklahoma as CIAM’s Graduation Speaker. To learn how he dared the impossible to achieve the extraordinary you don’t want to miss this event!

About the Historical War Memorial Building
The War Memorial Building is of special significance. Built to honor the American veterans of World War I, even the Royal Oak near the structure was planted by the Commander of all U.S. Forces in France during WWI, General of the Armies John J. Pershing. He held the highest rank ever given in the U.S., and given to only one other. He is the only individual to have held the rank of six-star general, and he did so while still living. In 1976, a Congressional promoted George Washington to the same rank. In the wall of the building is a cornerstone plaque placed there by Marshal Ferdinand Foch during his visit to Pasadena especially for the event in 1924. Marshal Foch of France was the commander of all Allied Armies, including that of the U.S. during World War I.
