Film Showing and Q&A Discussion with Director Zhang Tongdao

Kids Kingdom 82 min, 2009, China

This is a documentary film about a group of Chinese children who spend most of their time in the Ba Kindergarten, a preschool in Beijing. In this magical kingdom of children, a series of stories unfold. Sweet love sparkles between a four-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy; an aggressive boy, though tall, handsome, and charismatic, is a troublemaker and has to learn how to make friends with other children; a two-year-old boy is found out to be the mysterious “thief” whose strong curiosity has driven him to secretly steal playthings. Underneath these cute, innocent stories is a rare glance into China’s preschool education.

About the Director
Zhang Tongdao is a professor at the School of Arts and Media in Beijing Normal University. He is also a renowned documentary filmmaker.

我在一九八○年獨自來到美國大學醫院進修精神科，找到一個周末在診所做針灸的工作。病人少時，有機會和扎針的病人聊天。我剛來，對於一般工薪階級的收入很好奇，想知道與中國大陸相比差多少。於是，我向一個等待扎針的中學女教師發問。我知道問薪水是不禮貌的，所以問得拐彎抹角。
先問得她是中學教師後，我說，聽說中學教師工作很辛苦，她說還好。我問：「教師一個月能拿多少錢？」她沒有直接回覆，而是說要看教哪一科。我隨意挑了數學科再問，她說：「那要看是教高班還是低班。」高班吧！高班教師薪水應該比較高，她又說要看教師的年資高低。十年呢？算資深教師了，她還是沒給個答案，只說得看他得過什麼學位。我越問越好奇：「就算四年，得到了學士學位吧。」她淡淡地回答：「那要看他是不是畢業後是馬上就來教。」
這時，指示針灸的時鐘響了起來，於是我對她說聲「Excuse me」後就走進治療室，給病人拔針，宣布治療結束，讓她穿上衣服。那位女病人從治療床上起身的時候，對著我的耳朵悄悄地說：「醫生，你還沒有聽出來嗎？她不喜歡你問她的收入。哪有你們醫生多啊！」這時我才恍然大悟，犯了大忌。趕忙對這個友好的病人表示感謝。
另外有一次，也是在針灸辦公室，又犯了一個大忌。一個病人打電話來，問到一些有關針灸的問題，秘書把電話給我，要我回答。我懷抱滿腔熱情，盡量回答病人問題。這個病人問得很仔細，我也答得很仔細。就這樣，在電話上一來一往，不知談了多久，秘書忽然給我一張小紙條，上面寫了兩個字加一個問號﹕「Free Consultation？」（免費諮詢嗎？）她的意思很清楚，她不喜歡我向病人提供免費諮詢，我只好對病人說，「你來診所看病的時候我們再詳談吧！」
我在大陸時，歷來聽說「一寸光陰一寸金」和「知識就是力量」。不知道美國的座右銘不同，那是「一分知識一寸金，光陰也不能白扔」。難怪我後來發現美國醫生大多數不多話，問病、檢查，悶聲開化驗單或處方後，交給護士，由護士去應付病人。病人就算有問題，也很難插嘴發問的。這和我在大陸做醫生的作風真是大不相同。

Xilin Art Academy proudly announces that Mr. Zhang Yi, a highly acclaimed choreographer, dancer and educator from China will be teaching Xilin 2013 Summer Dance program I starting from June 1st, 2013. Zhang Yi is currently the Head of Department of Dance at Central China Normal University, and a visiting scholar at the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Columbia College in Chicago. He has been working in the performing arts field as a dancer, choreographer, instructor and researcher for two decades and won many awards in China. One of his works "Dream Flying like a Bird" won the Third-Place Award of Choreography and Excellence Award of Performing at the Ninth "Tao Li Bei" National Dance Competition in China. During his nearly 10-year tenure at the Department of Dance at Central China Normal University, Zhang Yi has successfully led the growth and development of the department as the Head and published several papers on various topics including the cultural elements of Chinese classical dance and the keys to successful dance instruction and education. He has also been actively involved in the directing and creation of various performing art shows on TV and locally. Zhang Yi received his Bachelor''s Degree from the renowned Beijing Dance Academy with a major in Chinese Classical Dance. He is currently a member of China Dancers Association and Hubei Dancers Association. We are honored and excited to have Mr. Zhang Yi joining our summer program.
In addition, we are pleased to announce that Xilin Artistic Director Wanma Jiancuo and two members of his group Ms. Song Chunwei and Mr. Chen Shifei
will be returning to Xilin to teach the summer program II starting from June 17th.
