Forget Chineseness: On the Geopolitics of Cultural Identification
Thursday, Feb 02, 2017, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
10383 Bunche Hall, UCLA
Taiwan Studies Lecture by Allen Chun, Academia Sinica
Forget Chineseness provides a critical interpretation not only of discourses of Chinese identity—Chineseness—but also of how they have reflected differences between “Chinese” societies, such as in Hong Kong, Taiwan, PRC, Singapore and communities “overseas.” It asserts that identity has meaning not only in cultural, representational terms but is moreover a product of its embeddedness in specific entanglements of modernity, colonialism, nation-state formation, and globalization. By articulating these processes underlying institutional practices vis-à-vis public mindsets, it is thus possible to elucidate various epistemic moments that lay the basis for their socio-political transformation.

From a broader perspective, this should have salient ramifications for prevailing discussions of identity politics. Not only has the concept of identity been predicated on flawed notions of ethnicity and culture in the social “sciences,” but it has been acutely exacerbated by polarizing assumptions that drive our understanding of identity “politics.” Allen Chun is Research Fellow at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan and the author of Unstructuring Chinese Society: The Fictions of Colonial Practice and the Changing Realities of “Land” in the New Territories of Hong Kong.

Challenges for China-U.S. Relations in the Age of Trump: Taiwan, the South China Sea, and International Economic Institutions
Friday, Jan 13, 2017
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
10383 Bunche Hall
Talk by Jacques deLisle, University of Pennsylvania Law School
As Donald Trump comes to power, the United States faces significant challenges in dealing with a now-formidable and recently more assertive China. To a great extent, the issues are rooted in long-term developments and would face any contemporary U.S. leader. To some degree, they are inherited from the bilateral relationship as shaped during Obama’s presidency. In significant part, they have been made more difficult by Trump’s statements and actions, and China’s perceptions and reactions. This pattern extends across many issues. Three notable ones are Taiwan, the South China Sea, and international economic institutions.
Jacques deLisle is the Stephen A. Cozen Professor of Law, professor of political science, director of the Center for East Asian Studies, deputy director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China, and co-director of the Center for Asian Law at the University of Pennsylvania, and director of the Asia Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. His writing, which appears in law reviews, foreign affairs journals, policy journals, edited volumes, and Internet and print media, focuses on China’s engagement with the international order, domestic legal reform in China, and Taiwan’s status and external relations. He is co-editor of China’s Global Engagement (with Avery Goldstein, 2017), New Media, the Internet and a Changing China (with Avery Goldstein and Guobin Yang, 2016), Political Changes in Taiwan under Ma Ying-jeou (with Jean-Pierre Cabestan, 2014), China’s Challenges (with Avery Goldstein, 2014), and China under Hu Jintao (with T.J. Cheng and Deborah Brown, 2005).

The Grand Canal of China
Saturday, January 21, 2:00-4:00pm
Speaker: Mr. Qifeng Cheng
Event fee: FREE, but advance registration is required
40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Grand Canal is the longest canal in the world and a famous tourist destination. Starting in Beijing, it passes through Tianjin and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the city of Hangzhou, linking the Yellow River and Yangtze River. The oldest parts of the canal date back to the 5th century BC, although the various sections were finally combined during the Sui dynasty (581-618 AD). The canal has been admired by many throughout history including Japanese monk Ennin (794-864), Persian historian Rashid al-Din (1247-1318), Korean official Choe Bu (1454-1504), and Italian missionary Matteo Ricci (1552-1610).
At this lecture, Mr. Qifeng Cheng, a researcher of the Grand Canal, will relate the history of the canal and its effect on Chinese society and culture. He will also share with the audience new findings through his and other scholars'''' research. Mr. Qifeng Cheng currently works for The National Association of Broadcasters. He also serves as the managing director of Today, a Chinese literary journal. This lecture will be in Chinese.
